Doping Prevention Programme for the Next Generation of Athletes

The University of Birmingham approached us to design the online platform for their doping prevention programme aimed at educating the next generation of athletes. It was our job to transform their current face-to-face course into a fully functional, educational web app with advanced interactive features.

The Challenge: Design a Web App to Replace In-Person Teaching

As part of a research project at the University of Birmingham, our client had created a 12-week anti-doping programme for young athletes aged 18-22. Before the programme began, participants filled out a questionnaire on how likely they were to dope. After the 12-week course, they filled out the questionnaire a second time. Following the programme, the vast majority of students were less likely to dope.

The success of the course led to funding to create an online portal and that’s when our client came to us. We were given the task of transforming their classroom-based teaching into a bespoke, interactive digital platform.

Far from a simple question and answer form, the web app required multiple interactive formats and application of conditional logic. A student’s answer to one question would dictate future questions, which would result in a more personalised learning experience.

Our Solution: Advanced Conditional Logic & Interactive Features

Login & Progress

We built a secure login and stored user progress so that students could quickly pick up where they left off. Students could see at a glance which lessons had been completed and a view their progress within their current lesson as a percentage.

Conditional Logic

To deliver a tailored course journey to every user, we needed to apply conditional logic. To achieve this, we first outlined every possible student journey. We then incorporated this structure into the app, so that specific questions followed certain answers.

We also implemented conditional logic to prevent students from skipping through the course. Users cannot progress to the next slide until answers are selected or typed, videos watched in their entirety and all information toggles have been clicked.

Personal Avatar Builder

To elevate the course experience, we created an avatar builder feature. Students can pick from a slider of avatars, once selected, their avatar makes appearances throughout the sessions.

Interactive Answer Formats

Answers are selected using a variety of formats including radio buttons, checkboxes, text drag and drops, ranging sliders with numeric tooltips and text areas. Each option required bespoke design and development and was essential to deliver an engaging and varied learning experience.

The Result: An Impressive Online Portal with International Potential

The final web app proved to be an intuitive, highly advanced learning portal that was the perfect online alternative to the University of Birmingham’s 12-week classroom course. Our clients at UOB are incredibly pleased with the outcome. The programme has received positive feedback from the International Olympic Committee and there is now interest in rolling it out across other countries.
