How We Transformed GLP Training’s Website into a Mobile-First Learning Platform

GLP Training provides professional courses and apprenticeships across facilities management, leadership and sustainability, professional services, and construction and trade. Their programmes support both individual learners looking to progress their careers and employers investing in workforce development.

However, their existing website wasn’t supporting this mission effectively. Despite 90% of traffic coming from mobile devices, the legacy site was not optimised for mobile use, resulting in a fragmented user experience and missed opportunities for engagement and enrolment.

KIJO was brought in to redesign and rebuild the platform from the ground up – transforming it into a high-performance, mobile-first WordPress website design that not only improved usability but also enabled GLP Training to sell courses directly online through an integrated Learning Management System (LMS). Beyond usability improvements, the project aimed to significantly increase site speed, strengthen technical SEO, and simplify the journey from browsing courses to enrolling in them.

Ultimately, the goal was to create a platform that worked equally well for individual learners exploring career opportunities and employers seeking training solutions for their workforce.

Project Objectives
From both a strategic and technical perspective, the KIJO team needed to focus on several key outcomes:

  • Mobile-First User Experience
Design a streamlined, intuitive journey for the 90% of users accessing the site via mobile devices.
  • LMS Integration
Implement a seamless course purchase and enrolment experience using LearnDash, allowing learners to access training content immediately after purchase.
  • Improved Site Performance
Optimise page speed and overall site performance to reduce bounce rates and ensure a smooth experience across devices.
  • Stronger Search Visibility
Enhance technical SEO and site architecture to improve discoverability and support long-term organic growth.
  • Higher Conversion Rates
Refine the user journey so visitors can move smoothly from browsing courses to applying or enrolling, reducing friction throughout the process.

Brand & Visual Identity Execution

The visual web design focused on balancing professionalism with approachability. High-quality photography of learners and professionals was used throughout the site, helping the platform feel human and authentic rather than overly corporate.

These images are framed using rounded geometric containers inspired by the shapes found within the GLP Training logo. By deconstructing the logo into circles, arcs and connecting shapes, the design creates a consistent visual language that appears across layouts, imagery and background elements.

A bold colour palette reinforces this identity. Deep navy conveys authority and trust for business audiences, whilst vibrant purples, mint greens and soft lilacs introduce energy and approachability for individual learners.

Whitespace and careful typography choices ensure the interface remains readable and comfortable, which is especially important for mobile users where smaller screens can easily feel crowded. By giving content room to breathe and establishing a clear typographic hierarchy, users can scan information quickly and understand key messages without feeling overwhelmed.

Mobile-First Learning Platform

As mentioned, the existing website wasn’t designed for the way users were actually accessing it. With the majority of traffic coming from mobile devices, the platform struggled to deliver a clear and streamlined experience on smaller screens. Course information was often dense, navigation felt fragmented, and the journey from browsing to applying wasn’t as intuitive as it needed to be.

Educational websites often struggle with dense information, like the above funding and course requirements. To prevent mobile users being overwhelmed by long pages of text, detailed information such as course modules and specifications was placed inside interactive accordion components. This keeps pages visually clean while allowing high-intent users to expand sections and explore content in more depth.

Progression Pathways & Segmented User Journeys

Another challenge was how courses were organised. With programmes spanning multiple sectors, presenting them as a simple catalogue made it harder for users to understand where to start or how their training could progress over time. Our team needed to rethink the structure so courses felt connected and purposeful rather than overwhelming.

Rather than presenting courses as a long, overwhelming list, the site was structured around Progression Pathways. This approach reframed the experience from “searching for a course” to planning a career journey.

Courses were grouped into logical pathways, helping users see where they could start and how their learning could progress over time. This significantly reduced cognitive load and allowed users to find the right course faster.

Because the site needed to serve both individual learners and business decision-makers, a split-gate navigation model was introduced. Students are guided through a journey focused on personal development and course enrolment, whilst employers are presented with information about workforce training, return on investment, and apprenticeship funding. This segmentation ensures each audience sees the content most relevant to them without being distracted by unrelated information.

Funding options and course requirements can often be complex in the training sector. To remove barriers to entry, the site now explains these processes in clear, plain language, supported by visual signposting and structured content. This makes it easier for both individuals and businesses to understand how training works and what their options are.

Course Pages & LMS Integration

A key part of the project was building a unified system that combined course sales with online learning delivery.
The platform uses WordPress as the core CMS, with WooCommerce handling course purchases and LearnDash powering the learning experience. When a user purchases a course through WooCommerce, they are automatically enrolled in the corresponding LearnDash programme, giving them immediate access to their training materials.
LearnDash provides structured learning paths, quizzes, progress tracking and certificates, whilst WooCommerce allows GLP Training to manage courses as products and bundles.
To ensure the LMS felt like a natural part of the website rather than a separate platform, the default LearnDash and WooCommerce templates were overridden and rebuilt within a custom theme. This allowed complete control over course pages, lesson layouts and checkout flows, ensuring the experience remained consistent with the GLP Training brand.
The system also supports group enrolments for employers and training cohorts, enabling businesses to manage multiple learners within a single structure.

Conversion & Application Journey

Course pages were redesigned to prioritise enrolment and application actions. A new multistep application form was introduced, breaking what would normally be a long form into smaller, manageable steps.

This approach was deliberate: complicated or lengthy forms are widely recognised as one of the biggest barriers to conversion. Research shows that when too many fields are presented at once, users are far more likely to abandon the process before even starting. In fact, studies have found that multi-step forms can convert up to 86% higher than single-page forms (LeadGen Economy, December 2025), largely because they reduce the perceived effort required to complete them.

By reducing form fatigue and guiding users through the process step by step, the application journey became significantly easier to complete on mobile devices too.

Several interface patterns were introduced to improve browsing on mobile devices. The Progression Pathways carousel allows users to explore training categories through a horizontal slider, a familiar and efficient interaction on smaller screens. This enables users to browse options quickly without excessive scrolling.

Primary calls to action feature subtle glow effects and interactive hover states, adding a modern and tactile feel to key actions such as exploring pathways or viewing courses.

Video integration also plays a role in building trust. A prominent video section provides an overview of the GLP Training experience, helping visitors understand the value of the programmes whilst increasing time spent on the page.

Finally, a high-impact social proof ribbon featuring organisations such as the Premier League, Hilton and B&Q reinforces credibility, particularly for employer audiences evaluating training providers.

The Results

The combination of a mobile-first structure, streamlined user journeys and a carefully optimised technical build delivered measurable improvements across performance, visibility and engagement.

On launch, the new website design achieved Google Lighthouse scores of 93+ across Performance, Accessibility and Best Practices. This demonstrates that the redesigned platform not only looks modern and visually engaging but also performs quickly and reliably across devices – a crucial factor for a site where the vast majority of users access it via mobile. High accessibility scores also ensure that course information remains clear and usable for a wide range of users, whilst strong best-practice scores confirm a clean, modern development approach built for long-term stability.

The improvements in site structure and technical SEO also contributed to stronger organic visibility. Following the launch of the new platform, GLP Training’s Domain Rating increased by 12.5% (Ahrefs), indicating improved search authority and a stronger foundation for long-term search growth.

This technical and structural optimisation is already translating into real user engagement. One example is the plastering course page, which experienced a 1093.1% increase in traffic following the redesign. By restructuring course pages around clearer pathways, improving search visibility and making content easier to navigate on mobile, the site now allows users to find and explore courses far more effectively than before.

These results reinforce the core objective of the project: transforming a legacy WordPress website into a high-performance learning platform that supports discovery, improves search visibility and makes it easier for users to move from interest to enrollment.
